This is a photo that was taken before the Halloween pageant in the final chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee fills this event with foreshadowing. This begins with Aunt Alexandra's apprehension before they walk to school. An ominous mood is set when Lee describes the pitch black night, and Cecil Jacobs sneaks up on the children. The pageant is an amusing little part of the novel. Mrs. Merriweather spend half an hour explaining the adventures of Colonel Maycomb and the history of Maycomb county to the crowd. The image that is created as the children dressed as agricultural products walk across the stage, Scout hurrying to catch up, helps re-establish the theme of small town life that appears throughout the novel.
