After Dill came back, one night I saw some papers fall out of his bag. I decided to go pick them up and I found a really nice letter that he wrote to his mom awhile back. Here is the letter I found:
Dear Momma,
I have been havin’ a nice time stayin’ down at Aunt Rachael’s house in Maycomb this summer. I’ve met two new friends, Scout and her brother Jem. They’re our neighbors. Scout is the most amazin’ girl I have ever met, and I want to tell you more about her. I love Scout ‘cause she’s beautiful, tomboyish, and mighty clever.
Scout is a real thing ‘o beauty. She’s got short, chestnut brown hair with bangs that glisten in the sun when we play outside. Her eyes ‘re the color of the ocean, a greenish-blue. She rarely dresses up. In fact, she usually wears overalls. I like the way she dresses more boyish than most girls ‘round here.
One thing I like about Scout is her tomboyishness. Scout’s a girl, but she don’t mind getting’ dirty. She always plays outside with Jem and me. She’s unlike any girl I’ve ever met before, and I love her for it. She’s not afraid of anything, and many times she’s been scolded for beating up other kids at school, which her father frowns upon. She will play outside with Jem and me all the time. On top of all this, she’s also incredible clever.
Somethin’ I think you should know about Scout is how smart she is. She’s the smartest girl I know. Scout knew how to read before she even started school. And guess what, momma? She taught herself how to do it! She also is a darn good writer, though she may not think it herself. She’s so bright and curious, Momma, you would love her!
Anyway, I’ve been having fun with Aunt Rachel, Jem, and especially Scout this summer. I can’t even begin to explain how amazin’ Scout is, but hopefully you got an idea. I want you to know that I asker to marry me. Is that ok? I’ll see you when fall rolls around.
